Black tea has its birthplace here, in Tongmu Village - Wuyi Mountains of China. Lapsang Souchong, with more than 400 years of history, is known to be the first world's black tea.
.
Recently, renowned brands discontinued their flagship Lapsang tea... what's going on with this legendary tea? Find it in the "STORY" below; and be at ease! We got you covered with this authentic non-smoky 2020 Lapsang tea.

DESCRIPTION

This Lapsang Souchong grows wildly in the National Natural Reserve of Tongmu at around 500m. over sea level. This is the authentic non-smoky version of Lapsang and it is totally hand-made from wild Bohea tea bushes.

TASTING NOTES

Many tea lovers love this tea's warm and comforting feeling, provided by the balanced flavour between malty, woody and mineral natural sweet notes, with a tangy and clean aftertaste. Golden colour in the cup.

STORY

The story has it that Lapsang Souchong was accidentally discovered when an army, during the Qing Dynasty, passed through Tongmu Village and camped out in the area where tea farmers had their unprocessed leaves. The occupation stopped farmers from carrying out the drying process. Once the army left, farmers rushed out to check the condition of their harvest... the leaves had been oxidising out for way too long..
.
Trying not to loose their year’s harvest, they figured out a way… they’d dry their tea leaves over pine wood charcoal! A note here: the Tongmu National Reserve has traditionally been rich in pine trees, and cutting down trees used to be a common practice… That’s how black tea originated, and how today’s “smoky” Lapsang was accidentally discovered and came to be world’s first black tea..
.
Recently, major brands (e.g.: Twinings) even discontinued their flagship Lapsang tea, experiencing “some challenges with sourcing their lapsang souchong”, having to take the “difficult decision to delist” it. A major concern here is about pine-tree deforestation. Years ago that cutting pine trees in Tongmu is forbidden; then it's gradually forbidden to import them, and by 2020, importing pine became totally forbidden in Tongmu.….
.
Therefore, production of authentic pine-tree-smoked Lapsang Souchong nowadays is very limited, in most of cases, the ones found in the market will be “fake” or alternative versions of it, artificially adding smoky flavours or trough means different than traditional pine-charcoal. It comes then to no surprise, that most of today’s authentic Lapsang Souchong in the market is the non-smoky one, undergoing the same process as in the origins, just skipping the pine-tree charcoal roasting.
