Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe) tea hardly needs an introduction. The world's most well-known oolong tea. Da Hong Pao is an oolong rock tea that grows in the Wuyi Mountains, China.
.
With the reputation to be one of the most expensive teas in the world; often referred as "more expensive than gold" (read "Description"). We bring you this purebred Da Hong Pao, cannot go more authentic!
.

DESCRIPTION

This "Big Red Robe" tea grows in the Mituo Rock, in the "Full Rock" area of the National Park of Wuyi. Not only a Full Rock, but it is a "Qidan" (奇丹) varietal Da Hong Pao, meaning it is a purebred Da Hong Pao - in opposition to commercial Da Hong Pao (blends), usually found in the market.
.
Qidan is direct descendant from the Da Hong Pao mother bushes (also Qidan varietal), planted in Wuyi areas since the 80's from cuttings of the mother bushes.
.
The reason why Da Hong Pao is often referred as "more expensive than gold" is that, a wealthy purchaser paid RMB 180,000 for 20g of Da Hong Pao from the mother bushes in 2002, one of the last times tea was harvested from these trees.
.
2005 was the last year tea was harvested from the ancient mother bushes. Nowadays, Qidan trees planted from the mother bushes in the 80's, are the most authentic Da Hong Pao. If you want to get a taste of the most original Da Hong Pao flavour, it cannot get any closer than this tea.
.
This Da Hong Pao tea leaves are from a 40 years old tree. It is a middle roasted Da Hong Pao, having undergone a traditional rock tea charcoal roasting process, specifically:
.
- A first roasting at 110 ºC

.
- A second roasting at 125 ºC

.
- A third roasting at 135 ºC

TASTING NOTES

As a purebred Da Hong Pao, its rock rhyme and mineral flavours are very present into it, more than it could be in most of the blended versions of DHP, however the fruity and fragrant flowery notes, as well as the warmth and sweet of the charcoal roast are still making of this a perfectly balanced tea.
